- Fauquier County -
Fauquier ARES participated in the Emergency Response Drill for Fauquier County held on September 22. The new county EOC was tested by the county during multiple emergency response events. ARES tested their communication equipment and utilized the local repeater (w4va) and simplex frequencies.
Chuck Kuhler, EC, N4KBC - DEC - It is about 4 weeks to the 32nd Marine Corp Marathon. We are almost ready. The Reagan National Airport Drill went fairly well and the issues that were discovered are being worked on. Jeff Wilson, AI4IO, Fairfax EC has taken the lead on a SET for next month. It looks like Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and Prince William Counties will also participate with Fairfax County in the SET.
District 3
All jurisdictions reported this month as a relatively quiet month, with little to report. As DEC, I concur with their assessment.District 4
- Boyd, KO4WK, EC/RO, Caroline County: - We had a "desktop" SET exercise on Sept 15. The goals are described at http://www.bealenet.com/~tbmoore/CarCoSET/ and we fulfilled most of the goals for the "shelter" station before we ran out of time and energy. We got more familiar with our county-supplied equipment and got the "goto" buckets ready for any future event. We also got the CW net going again - click the link to see the details. It is a good way to make your first CW contact - Damon, K4HDM did that this month. Congratulations, Damon! 73 & enjoy the fall colors.
- Tom, KI4AFE, EC/RO, Spotsylvania County: - The Focus program Nancy Ball produced on the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club volunteers at the WaWa 10-mile race aired on Sunday, Sept. 30. She included interviews with lots of the radio club members, plus race director Bob McDonald and even some runners. The program can be heard on all 3 of our radio stations. It aired at 6 am on WWUZ (96.9 FM) and WYSK (99.3 FM); and at 8:30 pm on WFLS (93.3 FM). In the week after it aired she posted it online to the Focus archives found at wfls.com/news. It stays there about 2 months. Visit the this URL to download the MP3 files for the interviews . The RVARC, which includes Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, Stafford and King George ARES members supported both the Wawa 10 miler and the Cannonball Century Bike Ride.
- Steve, KD4KNR, EC/RO, King George County - At the end of September, we moved into the new King George Fire/Rescue Company 1 located on Kings Hwy. The new EOC is located at the firehouse. We plan on running our SET exercise on October 6 out of the new EOC.
- Bart, N3GQ, EC/RO, Stafford County - Seven of us removed the hard-line and antennas from the old Stafford EOC. It was quite a chore going from the ceilings of 3 floors down to the basement. It will be installed in the new Stafford EOC Ham Shack at the end of October in the new County Public Safety Building. Many thanks to Emmett Price, K3EP for all the work he has done to arrange and lead the work party. We are planning our SET for early to mid-November; it will include checking our county shelter ham antennas.

Also, a Basic SkyWarn class was held at Community Memorial Health Center this month. The turnout was great. There were some familiar faces as well as many first time attendees. 42 ARES members and I provided runner safety communications for the 34th annual Virginia Ten Miler held in Lynchburg on September 29. The Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club has supported this race since it began in 1974. Amateurs were posted along the course, with race officials, police and fire/rescue, and in the Emergency Department at Lynchburg General Hospital over a roughly 4 hour period. Amateurs from Nelson and Albemarle Counties assisted with a 4 wheel drive event on September 21 and 22, but I did not get a report from the Nelson EC about the activity.
