James "Jim" Lawrence Kirkwood, 65, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Saturday, May 12, in Nags Head, North Carolina.
Mr. Kirkwood was born November 19, 1941, in Washington D.C., the son of the late James Lawrence and Carol Kirkwood, Jr. He was a retired civil servant with the Naval Research Lab, in Washington D.C., having served thirty years. He was a member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church in Hayfield, Virginia, a member of Winchester Masonic Hiram Lodge #21 AF and AM, and a life member of the NRA. Mr. Kirkwood was a volunteer for the Frederick County Sheriff's Department and the Winchester Medical Center. He was a HAM Radio enthusiast, using the call letters WB4BVV, for thirty-five years. Mr. Kirkwood was a graduate of Capital Radio Electronics Institute, Washington, D.C.
He married, Lois A Gaige, on May 6, 1967, at Fort Myers Chapel, Arlington, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of forty years, is his aunt, Adrain Borneman of Georgetown, Washington D.C., his cousins, Jack and Sue Lipscomb of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, and Peggy, Brian and Michael Flick of Lake Monticello, Virginia and his special companion, Winchester Medical Center Animal Assisted Therapy dog, "Lucky".
A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Reverend Sandra Nottingham officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Fraternal rites accorded by Winchester Masonic Hiram Lodge #21.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, from 5:00-7:00 PM, prior to the service, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.
