ARES Membership and Appointee Information

Thank you for your willingness to serve the Virginia Section and your community in times of communications emergencies or disaster.

Information submitted on this form is forwarded to your Section Emergency Coordinator, District Emergency Coordinator, your local Emergency Coordinator and a copy is maintained at the Section Level by the Assistant SM for Administration. If your local ARES unit is also registered with the Emergency Manager as the FEMA RACES unit, a roster of contact information may be given to the Emergency Manager of your jurisdiction by your local EC.

After your initial registration, if contact information, training or experience changes, please use this form for making updates. It is not necessary to complete the entire form but just enter your call and changes that would apply.

Information in the first section of this form will be used to contact you, especially during a communications emergency and / or call-up. The second section identifies ARRL, ARES and FEMA emergency courses you've completed, including the National Incidence Management System (NIMS) (used by most emergency managers), and the Incident Command System (ICS) (used by many emergency responders). The third section advises your Emergency Coordinator if you have commitments to other emergency organizations. The fourth section pertains to any actual experience you may have in real emergency situations. The final section identifies any special communications capability that you may have and new interests you may want to learn about.

FIXED STATION CAPABILITY

Fixed Station Capability in this sense means that the amateur radio equipment is operational and ready to go on the air from your shack. It does not include any equipment that takes considerable time to bring into operation. It is equipment that you know works, that you use on a regular basis, and that you are familiar operating and comfortable using.

MOBILE STATION CAPABILITY

A mobile station is an amateur radio station located in a terrestrial vehicle, intended to be operated while the vehicle is in motion or stationary. These vehicles include cars, vans, trucks, SUVs, RVs, etc. A mobile rig is powered from the vehicle and is installed (affixed) within the vehicle. A hand-held transceiver, even if connected to an antenna attached to a vehicle, is not considered a mobile rig. It is a portable rig. If you have marine mobile or aeronautical mobile capability, please indicate that in your comments.

PORTABLE STATION CAPABILITY

All portable equipment should be self-sufficient. You may have to communicate from a number of locations in an area that you cover on foot. You carry the communications equipment that you will be using. A portable station may also include equipment that you can set up at a fixed location. Incident command posts, mass shelters, feeding stations, emergency logistic locations are examples. These stations may be needed for days or even weeks. You should be prepared to provide antennas for your equipment at these temporary locations. A trailer equipped with operational radio gear that is intended primarily for stationary operation is also considered a portable station for ARES purposes.
